Matka silk is a thick, handwoven silk fabric crafted from the waste mulberry silk (pierced cocoons) without removing the natural gum (sericin). Originating prominently from Bhagalpur, Bihar-known as the “Silk City”-it features a distinctive rough, slubbed texture and a matte finish similar to linen, while retaining the soft drape and breathability of silk. It is highly durable, lightweight, and widely used for premium suits, waistcoats, sarees, and tailored garments.

Bhagalpur Matka Silk is a distinctive, eco-friendly handloom fabric crafted in the historical silk hub of Bhagalpur, Bihar-famously known as India’s “Silk City.” Renowned for its unique rustic aesthetic and structural integrity, Matka silk offers a rare blend of organic texture and refined elegance.

Origin & Craftsmanship
Matka silk is traditionally spun from thick mulberry silk yarn obtained from pierced cocoons (where the silk moth escapes naturally). The yarn is hand-spun using traditional techniques without fully removing the natural gum (sericin). This hand-spinning process creates intentional slubs, subtle slubbed lines, and slight variations across the weave, giving every yard of fabric an authentic, artisanal character.

Key Characteristics
Texture & Appearance: Features a characteristic rough, slubbed texture with a subtle, non-glossy matte finish that resembles fine linen, while retaining the luxurious body and fluid drape of pure silk.

Durability & Weight: It is a medium-to-heavyweight fabric known for its remarkable strength, crisp structure, and resistance to creasing.

Breathability & Comfort: Despite its thick, rich hand feel, Matka silk remains highly breathable and comfortable across seasons, keeping the wearer cool in warm weather and providing mild insulation in cooler temperatures.

Dye Absorption: The natural fibers take richly to organic and synthetic dyes, producing deep, vibrant hues as well as soft, earthy neutral tones.

Common Uses
Due to its rich texture and natural structure, Bhagalpur Matka silk is exceptionally versatile and widely used for:

Tailored Garments: Nehru jackets, waistcoats, blazers, bandhgalas, and structured suits.

Traditional & Fusion Wear: Elegant sarees, kurtas, sherwanis, ethnic dress materials, and dupattas.

Home Decor & Crafting: Premium upholstery, cushion covers, and luxury drapery.

Care Instructions
To preserve the natural fibers, luster, and structure of Bhagalpur Matka silk, dry cleaning is recommended. Avoid harsh detergent washes or wringing. When ironing, use a low-to-medium heat setting with steam or an iron-safe press cloth.
